Welcome back everyone. It will take a little time to get back into our routine as we are all a little rusty!! Please God we will have a happy healthy and productive year.
This month we will learn an Irish and English song. The Irish song is a story about milking cows and the music that keeps them happy. Getting to know you is an appropriate song for the start of a new year.Take a look at the videos below.

We read about the Legend of Br Mac Cudda. This is a local legend in Killarney County Kerry. We might take a visit sometime to Innisfallen island and see his ghost. We discussed our own local legends. The story of Alice Kyteler is a particularly interesting Kilkenny legend.
Seamus Heaney is one of the greatest poets of all time. We are so proud that he was one of our own. His death is a huge loss to his family and to the country. We read his famous poem "Blackberry Picking". Take a look at the video below of Seamus reciting this poem.
We are learning about the Islands of Ireland. We are trying to imagine what life is like on an Island. We also thought about why there are so many Islands off the west coast of Ireland. We discovered that there is a rich and varied population of birds and animals on our islands. These include birds such as puffins and razorbills. Seals, whales, dolphins and turtles are found off shore. There are many interesting ruins on our islands. We took a close look at Skellig Michael. Check out the photos below.
We read an interesting factual piece in our new reader Let's Go about the great waterfalls of the world. We learned that there have been many brave and crazy feats at the Niagara Falls. In the 1901 a school teacher called Annie Edson Taylor went over the falls in a barrel. Ms Flynn has visited the falls but has no intention of ever performing such a crazy stunt. Take a look at these videos of the falls.
We are attempting to learn the cup song. It is tricky and requires 100% concentration. This level of concentration is also needed when we are completing our work. It is something we all find challenging. We are hoping that we can transfer some of these new powers of concentration across all aspects of our lives.
We are learning about monasteries. This follows on nicely from our study of the Islands. Many monasteries were built on Islands due to their isolation and peace and quiet. Skellig is a great example of this. The beehive huts and main structure of the island can still be seen.
